Credit Interpretation Request

November 21, 2010

We are going for one additional point through the Credit Interpretation Request process.  This Credit Interpretation Request follows the format required for LEED for Homes:

Credit Interpretation Request
Relevant credit: AE 1.3 Public Awareness LEED-H Version #: pilot vI.II
Provider: Building Knowledge, Inc. Priority: High
Project: Schifman Residence 2400 Cedar Shore Drive, Minneapolis, MN Origination date: 3/8/2011
Project type: Single family, detached, custom Resolution deadline:
Credit interpretation request: While we have met only two out of the three requirements outlined in AE 1.3, the website and newspaper article, we believe that the website as well as other public awareness activities  we are engaging in warrant consideration for one point:

Website: As LEED project manager and homeowner, I started a blog that details each LEED for Homes credit, whether we got a point, how difficult or easy it was, and other commentary on the process (www.greenintention.wordpress.com).   I wrote a blog post every Monday – Thursday starting May 17, 2010; it continues to the present (85 out of 100 posts are devoted to LEED for Homes thus far). The blog also addresses how we try to live sustainably in our home, now that it has been built to LEED standards.  The blog averages 40 views per week (over 100 in the past two weeks), and has had over 1,300 views, with very little attempt at any publicity.  I plan to make this blog much more public through enhanced design and linking with other relevant websites.

Article: The Southwest Journal, a bi-monthly free community newspaper, published my article  on why we built a LEED Certified home in its Home Improvement issue 3/7/2011.  The Southwest Journal provides award-winning coverage of civic issues, remarkable neighbors, and arts and culture for 21 neighborhoods in Southwest Minneapolis. It is THE comprehensive guide to news and happenings , and the local paper that people actually read.

Tours: On September 18, 2011, we are hosting  a“Heart of the Home Tour” for the  non-profit organization National Council on Jewish Women.   Typically over 100 people (who pay to attend) come into the home (about 20-25 at a time) for a tour on a specific topic; ours will be on the benefits of a LEED home.   We will also host an AIA tour this fall.

Once we achieve certification, we will mount appropriate signage in our entryway.

  1. While an article is planned to be published in a local newspaper in March 2011, we are currently not submitting this credit interpretation request. If all goes well, we will not need this extra point.

  2. Turns out we do need this extra point, as we lost one in Sustainable Sites and we are just at the gold threshold. Hopefully the good folks at the USGBC will award us one point here for Awareness and Education.
